The 'Slow Fashion' Movement
Donna McClelland·July 19, 2024
The fashion industry produces up to 100 billion garments a year.
Up to 92 million tons of clothing end up in landfills each year.
87% of the materials used to make clothing end up in landfills.
Only about 20% of textiles are reused/recycled globally.
... and the stats go on.

Extending the life cycle of clothing by a further 9 months would reduce carbon, waste & water footprints by 20-30% each.
"Buy less, choose well, make it last"
"Fashion shouldn’t cost the earth"
"Waste isn’t waste until we waste it"
Those are statements made by leaders in the fashion/textile industry.
In the US, we
generate just over 17 million tons of textile waste/year
About 112 lbs per person.
66% of that is landfilled, 19% is burned and 15% is recycled.
We are buying 60% more clothing, only to discard each item after wearing it half as much. Yikes
'Slow Fashion' is an on-going effort to counteract the waste in the textile market. It is meant to
slow down the rapid pace of
clothing consumption/waste. These designers only
produce what is ordered with the intent for consumers to
buy fewer, better quality items intended to be
passed on, reused, redesigned or recycled. A circular system where today’s
fashion throwaways are tomorrow’s raw materials, they are upcycling
post-consumer waste, fabric scraps, plastic waste and more innovative approaches to combat the waste. Many use organic fibers, which means they have no plastic and when they can no longer be used, they will naturally biodegrade.
Black Wagon Kids Boutique supports the 'slow fashion' movement by purchasing clothing mainly from these suppliers. We seek them out. They utilize materials that can be reused/recycled cleanly.
Black Wagon Kids Boutique looks for quality that lasts for many years, with the intent to be passed on. Mostly organic or natural fibers, produced
in ethical conditions where workers are treated and paid fairly.
Black Wagon Kids Boutique is trying to do our small part. As we all get more conscious and act on behalf of our conscience, the world can only change for the better.
Thanks for supporting our small business since 2006!
