Home » About Black Wagon
Black Wagon is mad about anything lighthearted, irreverent, innovative, and earth-friendly in children's design. Our Portland, Oregon shop reflects the city's commitment to living sustainably and supporting local and independent designers. We offer a handpicked selection of classic and fashion-forward accessories, clothes, toys, books, bedding, and decor. From independent labels like Little Lark and Lucky Wang, to well-known lines like Appaman, Glug and Trumpette, Black Wagon ransacks the universe for well-made, witty, beautiful-but-not-terribly-precious kid stuff.
Located in Portland's eclectic Mississippi neighborhood, our shop is kid-friendly with plenty of room for strollers. While we're a big hit with families, Black Wagon's ageless art selection and design aesthetic make for an inviting experience for the kid-free set, too! Whether in person or online, making you a happy shopper is our bread and (peanut) butter. We know our merchandise, so expect us to help you pick out the perfect gift. We'll tell you if a size runs small and make sure your special selections arrive in time for that birthday party, baby shower, holidays, whatever the occasion! Not only do we get excited about the innovative styles and designs we feature in clothing and kid stuff, but we are excited to connect with members of both our Portland and on-line communities!

About Sarah
Sarah Shaoul brings to Black Wagon at least three generations of style baggage inherited from her clotheshorse ancestors: Thrift, Quality, and that certain Je Ne Sais Quoi that makes you clutch your hands together and desperately want something because it's exactly what you had in your head, only even better. Her first venture brought modern classics and fantastic vintage finds together at Portland's inimitably eclectic, hip, and affordable Retread Threads.
Life happened, and as a new mom, Sarah was motivated to find unique, wearable, eco-friendly designs (without licensed TV characters) for her first son. Black Wagon was born! Now with two sons, Sarah and her husband work hard to keep up with the boys' antics and their fine taste in clothes, food and dirt!
Sarah is also a small-business advocate for locally owned and operated businesses. She serves as a consultant and is a member of Portland's Small Business Advisory Council.
